Generation Educated

Here's a nice thought that I think says something about the direction our society might finally be headed: It occurred to me today that I know a lot of people in a lot of different walks of life, and I don't think I currently know even one other person in my personal life, in any location throughout the country, who does not have at least a Bachelor's degree. In fact, almost everyone I know went to reputable universities, and many went on to earn Master's degrees. Even my friends who had almost no support from parents and were dealt a really shitty hand in life found a way to put themselves through school anyway.

For example, my friend Meg, whose parents both died when she was young and left her an actual orphan (really... no guardians), studied her ass off through B.A., M.A., and Ph.D., for more than ten years, and is now a clinical psychologist in a major NYC psychiatric hospital.

Another good friend of mine managed to work his way through college in middle America, despite the fact that no one in his family had ever before or has ever since even considered higher education.

I think it says something very positive about the will, the intelligence, the determination, and the perseverance of Generation X... that the perception is that it's inexcusable to not be properly educated we're no longer willing to say "yeah, well, no one in my family ever went to college..." It's a generation I can be proud to be a part of.

William at Five Months

It's Summer again, which means occasional Friday concerts in the park up in Carlsbad. A lot of my friends are several years older than me, which means I get to hang out at events like this where it's a sea of strollers and diaper-clad little ones... an incredibly foreign thing for where I am right now in my life.

It is, however, a good excuse to hang out with my best friends and take new pictures of William. It's all part of my new mission to make him an absolute ham. He's the happiest baby I've ever met, so he's a great subject.
