About Julie
I was born in Chicago and lived the first few years of my life on the south side of that absolutely incredible city. To this day, a part of me still considers it home. On a morning in early September 1978, an event took place that changed the course of my life forever. The 29 years since then have taken me across the nation and to both coasts (California as a kid, Memphis for high school and New York for college).
Now, I live near the beach in north San Diego with a dear friend of mine and two cats named Samantha and Zoe. I am thirty-three. So far, my thirties are the best. I have a Bachelor's in journalism, a Master's in psychology and I work in sales for a small custom home improvement company. I love Yoga, running and hiking, swimming, writing, photography, art, books, and cinema, travel, the ocean, the Internet, good food and wine and, most of all, my friends and family. I'm passionate and introspective... constantly analyzing and reanalyzing my life, looking for threads and learning as much as possible from each and every experience.
Why
Because it really is about the little things in life - the small experiences that weave into a larger scheme. I have a rich life that I love, and I want to share it with others.
Writing has always been my best form of expression. I've been doing some form or another of it since I learned to hold a crayon. I originally launched this website in September 2004 to give myself a creative outlet, to share my stories with others, to catalog the small occurrences in my life (I know that someday, I'll look back and appreciate it), and to further develop my writing skills. Click here to start at the beginning and read about what inspired me to do this.
Since my website's launch it has grown in readership, and has become a venue through which I keep in touch with my current friends and in a couple of cases, have reconnected with some old ones. It's a new-generation way of staying in touch. I've started to love reading about the lives of others who find passion in this same hobby.
Weblogging has become a part of my life... something I look forward to doing, one way that I unwind and decompress and now, I can't imagine not doing it. My hope is that you will enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy writing it.
Colophon
I started this website on a 14-inch Apple iBook, the predecessor of my current (lovely) 15-inch MacBook Pro.
I use Movable Type to publish all of the content on this website.
I take the majority of my photos with a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT. When portability is a concern, I use a Canon PowerShot SD500 as well as my iPhone for occasional moblogging.
I organize all of my photography in Flickr. I love Flickr almost as much as I love my camera.
I use Adobe Photoshop CS to manipulate all of my graphics, and to create new mastheads and color schemes for my website.
I download most of my fonts from 1001 Free Fonts. I'm using Zapfino and Helvetica for my current masthead, and Arial and Century Gothic for headings and text on the site.
Because I'm too lazy to create them myself, I download a lot of my masthead graphics from iStockPhoto.com. iStockPhoto is really cool. My tiled backgrounds usually come from Kaliber 10K, however, I personally created all current artwork.
I use Site Meter to track the flow of traffic to my website.
My website is hosted by LivingDot and I cannot say enough good things about them. If you're looking for a web hosting company, particularly for weblogging, look no further.
Copyright
Unless otherwise noted, all writing, photography, design and CSS on this website is my original work and is copyrighted. I don't steal, and I hope you won't either. You can feel free to reprint or post anything you find here (in non-commercial settings) just as long as you give me credit.
