Nesting and the Art of Feng Shui

I've been waiting nearly four months for my bedroom furniture and yesterday, it finally came. The arrival inspired a complete revamping of my sleeping quarters... all new bedding, reorganization of my closet, etc. etc. I've spent some recent time reading through a very user-friendly book on Feng Shui called Move Your Stuff, Change Your Life. I'm pretty rational (if not skeptical) about things like this but seriously... I think there's something to it. After spending just a few minutes reorganizing my living room, it started to feel different in there.

For anyone who might not know, the basic concept is that each of the areas of a home (and then each room) are divided into nine different centers:

- Prosperity
- Fame and Reputation
- Relationships and Love
- Family
- Health
- Creativity and Children
- Skills and Knowledge
- Career
- Helpful People and Travel

The idea is that there are certain things that you do and don't want in each of these areas... things that could bring good fortune, counteract negative energy (or increase the flow of positive energy), and just generally make a place feel better. Some people think entire life situations have the possibility of changing just based on applying the principals of Feng Shui. Interestingly enough, though I've always done well in my job, when I moved my office into the room that holds the prosperity corner of my house and started spending a lot of time in there, getting it organized and making it really nice, my products just started to sell themselves. I'm not discounting my own ability... because clearly that has a lot to do with it. But I have to wonder whether the ancient art might have also been a part of it. And it's kind of like wishing on lucky stars and eyelashes, or praying for things I want really badly. Even if it's not working, it can't hurt.

The only thing missing from the room is art. I bought a whole bunch of frames and some of those photo ledges and I'm going to work with those on a couple walls. Over the bed, I'm going for a big print of Klimt's The Kiss. Cliche, I know, but I've always loved the painting and it's most certainly appropriate for this space.

Here are a couple of pictures of the cozy sanctuary:

And in the armoire, there's a giant TV (and soon to be DVD player), perfect for lazy Sundays:

Nice work. I think "the Kiss" would look really great with the colors in your room.

I love getting all set up and organized. It always feels so good to have things in order and to have a place where you can truly feel at ease and really relax.

I think your room is missing something very important though...a manservant. Yeah, you definitely need a manservant to feed you bon-bons, rub your feet, bring you drinks, draw your baths, and all the other things a manservant might be good for.

Manservant, indeed. I might need a couple of those. ;-)
