The Great American Skeeve-off

What is going on?

I guess you can't possibly want to be a major politician without having a seriously inflated ego, but still - I can't believe the lack of integrity and the level of infidelity that has been exhibited by some of these dudes in New York and New Jersey. Here we've got Governor Eliot Spitzer screwing prostitutes before resigning his position. For the life of me, I can't understand how his wife stands there by his side looking upon him compassionately... God knows how many STDs she's contracted as a result of his numerous indiscretions, not to mention the moral issues that go along with things like this. Rumor has it that Spitzer was being considered by the Clinton camp for the vice presidential nomination. Good thing this came out before we got a little further in the race... Hillary doesn't need any more help fucking up her campaign.

Then, just to add insult to injury, they've got the newly-minted Governor David Paterson holding a freaking news conference to proactively announce infidelities (one of which was with a state employee) committed by both he and his wife during a rough patch of their marriage. Whatever... that's his business. But please - don't hold a news conference about it. No one wants to know who you and your wife have slept with.

Across the Hudson in New Jersey, Jim McGreevey is coming back out of the woodwork to defend himself against the bombshell that was revealed today... that he and his wife were doing the nasty with their freaking chauffeur. "My client wants very, very much to settle this case, without any further public exposure or hoopla," is how his attorney responded. Yeah, I'll bet. It's pretty embarrassing.

Does it get any grosser than this? Each one of these dudes is skeevier than the next!!! The other day, Al and I were talking about what had thus far surfaced while we were on our way out to Borrego and he admitted something that I've always personally experienced and had trouble articulating... that he doesn't know what it is, but he just LOVES watching stuff like this unfold. For him, it's appealing to see someone caught, red-handed, in an action that can't possibly be denied. For me, it just confirms what I've always thought... politicians are terribly crooked.

Is it just politicians, or do we just only hear about the politicians? I, for one, don't think I've ever met anyone with anywhere near this level of skeleton in the closet. The worst things I have in my past are that I used work time to screw around on the Internet, and once slept with a college friend with whom I had no intention of having a relationship.

It's no wonder this country is in such an awful mess.
